This is an adaptation of Box 7 (p. 93). Rather then spending a week looking at something, I'd like you to spend from Thursday to Sunday watching something and recording observations about it. Your subject must be one that will alter in some way over that time. Use the double-entry note format, in which you record direct observations in one column and reflections or a response to those observations in the other column.
On Sunday or Monday write a brief response (2 paragraphs) about the experience. Discuss in one paragraph what surprised you the most and what you would do differently if you were to continue your observations. How might you connect what you have seen with an overall hunch or hypothesis? In the second paragraph, write about your reaction to the experience of taking notes itself. Did you develop a good system, or were there some problems that you'll need to work out?
A sample response to this assignment can be found on pp 93-94 (although this student doesn't write about the note-taking process, which you'll need to do).
Post your response to iLabs (as a reply to the "Fieldnotes" thread) by Monday, 20th.
