Descriptivity:

Passive voice: forms of the verb “to be” (be, am, is, are, was, were, being, been)

Ex:

As the patient undressed, scars were seen on her back.
vs
As the patient undressed, the doctor saw scars on her back.

Ex:

The pumps were destroyed by a surge of power
vs
A surge of power destroyed the pumps.

According to Rules for Writers, the passive voice is sometimes appropriate.

Ex: Many native Hawaiians are forced to leave their beaches to make way for hotels.

Use of “you” also can work to hide the “actors,” or the people doing things at your fieldsite.

Ex:

In the classroom, you first say hello to the teacher, then you sit at the computer and put in your password.
vs
In the classroom, students usually say hello to the teacher and then log into their computers at their seats.
